Pontiac Professional Cars
Hearses, Ambulances and Limos, Oh My!
By Bob Wicker Photos from the Internet
When we think of limousines, we generally think of Cadillacs, Lincolns, Mercedes or those huge Hummer Limos. When we think of hearses, we tend to think Cadillacs or Lincolns. Ambulances today are all built on truck chassis. However, in the past there were companies that were building these specialty vehicles on the Pontiac Chassis, using modified Pontiac bodies. In these trades, the vehicles are called "Professional Cars" and they are becoming quite collectable in some automotive circles.
Three companies in particular, Armbruster, Stageway and Superior built thousands of these special Pontiacs over the years.
Armbruster began building stretch limousines in the 1930's. Their long limos were used by touring orchestras and as hotel limos to transport guests to and from the airport. They began building stretch Pontiac limos in 1960. In 1962, they merged with limo builder Stageway to form Armbruster Stageway and continued building limos using Pontiacs and other chassis/bodies in to the 1980's.

Stageway also used Pontiac chassis and bodies beginning in 1960, prior to the merger with Armbruster. Limousines were their primary business.
Superior Coach began using Pontiac chassis and bodies to build hearses in 1936. They continued to build Pontiac based Hearses, Ambulances and Limos until 1974. They also built professional cars on many other chassis brands.
Other companies such as Acme, Barnette, Economy, Memphis and National also built professional vehicles based on Pontiac chassis and bodies.

It is easy to imagine these stately Pontiac Professional ambulances driving the streets of America back in the day, but a New York patient or a Los Angeles personal injury attorney today would hardly recognize any similarities to our specialized modern ambulances. Anyone injured in an accident today would probably be skeptical of one of these old ambulances transporting them to the hospital.
